Schwinn Unveils Concrete Furniture Hardware Collection by Karen Konzuk
At the 2016 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas (Jan 19 - 21), Schwinn Hardware unveiled its remarkable concrete hardware collection for furniture by award-winning jewelry designer, Karen Konzuk. This collaboration marks the first product launch in the Schwinn Collection, a select assortment of furniture hardware built on partnerships with designers of exceptional achievement.
The Schwinn Collection received enthusiastic attention during KBIS as visitors felt the texture of the concrete and admired the contrast of materials: light concrete with brushed stainless steel, dark concrete with brushed brass and dark concrete with brushed copper. These combinations took form in coordinated designs of tapered handles and spherical knobs. The limited production runs of the collection make it all the more enticing and the company is targeting areas where modern design is particularly strong.
Schwinn selected Konzuk’s work for its innovative combination of materials, executed in a clean, modern style that fits the company’s design directive. For over ten years, the Canada-based designer has been successfully creating concrete-and-metal jewelry that she calls “wearable architecture”. The translation into furniture hardware was a seamless extension of her work. Konzuk not only designs the pieces, but also creates her own molds and casts the concrete by hand. She sets the castings into the metal fittings with the fine skills of a jeweler. Schwinn Hardware will be rolling out the collection in the fall.
